Wix is a solid starter platform. But as your business grows, the cracks start to show. Here’s what we hear from clients who’ve made the switch: Design ceiling. Wix gives you drag-and-drop freedom, but that freedom often leads to inconsistent layouts. Squarespace’s structured templates mean every page looks polished and professional without fighting the grid. SEO foundations. Squarespace has cleaner URLs, better built-in SEO tools, and faster page speeds out of the box. For businesses that rely on being found online, this matters. No ads, ever. Free and lower-tier Wix plans show Wix branding on your site. Squarespace never puts their branding on your pages. Simpler management. One platform for hosting, domains, email, analytics, and design. No third-party plugins to manage, update, or troubleshoot. E-commerce built in. Squarespace Commerce handles products, subscriptions, and digital downloads natively — without bolt-on apps.
Transparent pricing.

Before you start, let’s set expectations. A Wix to Squarespace migration isn’t a one-click process. Here’s what transfers and what doesn’t:
What transfers
Your text content, images, and basic page structure can be moved manually. Blog posts can be exported from Wix and imported into Squarespace using an XML file. Your domain transfers seamlessly — we’ll cover that below.
-
Your Wix design, templates, and layout won’t carry over — you’ll be building on a new Squarespace template. Wix apps and integrations don’t transfer either. Any forms, booking systems, or custom Wix apps will need Squarespace equivalents. And your URL structure will likely change, which means you’ll need 301 redirects to preserve your SEO.
-
Step 1: Audit your current Wix site
Before touching anything, catalogue what you have. List every page, blog post, image, form, and integration on your Wix site. Note which pages get the most traffic — these are your priority pages. Screenshot your current design for reference.
Step 2: Choose your Squarespace template
Browse Squarespace’s template library and pick one that matches your industry and goals. Don’t worry about finding a perfect match — every Squarespace template is fully customisable. Focus on the overall layout structure rather than colours and fonts, which you’ll change later.
Step 3: Export your blog content from Wix
If you have blog posts on Wix, export them as an XML file. In Wix, go to your blog dashboard, find the export option, and download the file. You’ll import this into Squarespace later.
Step 4: Build your new site on Squarespace
Start your Squarespace trial and begin rebuilding. Copy your text content page by page. Re-upload your images. Import your blog XML file. Set up your navigation structure. This is also the perfect opportunity to improve your content — update outdated copy, add stronger calls to action, and optimise for keywords you weren’t targeting before.
Step 5: Set up 301 redirects
This is critical. Map every old Wix URL to its new Squarespace equivalent. In Squarespace, go to Settings, then Advanced, then URL Mappings. Add each redirect in the format: /old-wix-page -> /new-squarespace-page 301. This tells search engines your content has permanently moved, preserving your rankings.
Step 6: Transfer your domain
You can either transfer your domain to Squarespace entirely, or point it using DNS settings. We cover both methods in detail in our domain transfer guide.
Step 7: Test everything before going live
Check every page on mobile and desktop. Test all forms, links, and buttons. Verify your redirects work. Check your site speed. Preview how your pages look in Google search results. Only when everything checks out should you point your domain to your new site.
-
You have two options:
Option 1: Transfer the domain entirely. This moves your domain registration to Squarespace. You’ll need to unlock the domain in Wix, request an authorisation code, then initiate the transfer from Squarespace. The process takes 5-7 days.
Option 2: Point via DNS. Keep your domain registered at Wix but point it to Squarespace using DNS records. This is faster but means managing your domain separately from your site.
-
The biggest risk in any migration is losing search rankings. Here’s how to protect yours:
Set up 301 redirects for every page. No exceptions. Even pages you think don’t get traffic might have backlinks pointing to them.
Keep your page titles and meta descriptions. If a page was ranking well, don’t rewrite the title tag just because you’re on a new platform.
Submit your new sitemap to Google Search Console immediately after launching. This tells Google to recrawl your site and discover the new URLs.
Monitor your rankings for 2-4 weeks after migration. Some fluctuation is normal. Significant drops usually mean a redirect is missing.
-
Forgetting redirects. We’ve said it three times because it’s that important. Every old URL needs a redirect.
Migrating on a Friday. If something goes wrong, you want to catch it during the working week when support is available.
Not testing on mobile. Over 60% of web traffic is mobile. If your new site doesn’t work on phones, you’ve lost the majority of your visitors.
Trying to replicate your Wix design exactly. Squarespace works differently. Embrace the new platform’s strengths rather than fighting against them.
Skipping the content audit. Migration is the perfect time to cut weak pages and strengthen your best ones.
-
If you do it yourself, the only cost is your Squarespace plan — starting from £13/month for Personal or £27/month for Business. Budget 10-20 hours of your time depending on site size.
If you hire a professional, expect to invest £2,500–£8,000 for a full migration with redesign, depending on complexity. This includes content migration, design customisation, SEO setup, redirects, and testing.
At Novule, we handle Wix to Squarespace migrations end-to-end. You focus on your business. We handle the technical work, the design, and the SEO - so your new site launches without a hitch.
-
DIY: 1-3 weeks depending on site size. Professional: typically 3-8 weeks with our team handling everything.
-
Not if you set up 301 redirects correctly. There may be minor fluctuations for 2-4 weeks, but your rankings should recover and often improve thanks to Squarespace’s cleaner code and faster speeds.
-
Yes. Product data can be exported from Wix and imported into Squarespace Commerce. You’ll need to reconfigure payment processing, shipping, and tax settings on the new platform.
-
Your Wix design won’t transfer, so you’ll be choosing a new Squarespace template. Most businesses use this as an opportunity for a complete refresh rather than trying to replicate their old design.
